Why Habits Matter in Agile

Several years ago I came across Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and thougt about how this habits could be applied to Agile Teams to make them highly effective. This was also inspired by a presentation from Richard Knaster (2013). Over the years I have applied this framework several times with great success with a variety of teams around the world. The impact of having teams following these habits on the overall corporate culture is really impactful as it drives ownership and accountability from the bottom up. Let me now share this framework with you.

Introduction

Agile methodologies have transformed the way teams develop products, solve problems, and collaborate. However, just following Agile frameworks—Scrum, Kanban, SAFe—doesn’t automatically lead to success, often the contrary.

What truly separates high-performing Agile teams from struggling ones?

💡 It’s not just tools or frameworks—it’s habits.

Effective Agile teams don’t just “do Agile”; they live Agile. Day In - Day Out. Their daily behaviors and mindsets drive smoother collaboration, faster delivery, and long-term success. This is why developing the right habits is crucial.

🚀 Over the next few posts, we’ll explore the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Agile Teams.

Each post, we’ll deep dive into one habit, providing real-world examples, challenges teams face, and actionable steps to integrate these habits into your Agile workflow.

Why Habits Matter More Than Methodologies

When companies adopt Agile, they often focus on:

✅ Implementing Scrum, Kanban, SAFe or ...

✅ Setting up Jira boards

✅ Running daily standups and retrospectives

But have you ever seen a team that follows all the Agile rules yet still struggles with delays, misalignment, and frustration?

This happens because Agile isn’t just about following a framework—it’s about mindset and behaviors.

👎 Struggling teams focus on Agile processes but ignore the habits that drive success.👍 Thriving teams develop habits that empower them to adapt, collaborate, and improve continuously, based on the 12 Agile Principles.

The Power of Habit in Agile Teams

Habits shape how teams respond to challenges, collaborate, and deliver results. Consider these two teams:

🔴 Team A (Poor Habits, Process-Oriented)

  • Focuses on completing sprint tasks without questioning priorities.

  • Blames external factors when things go wrong.

  • Runs retrospectives but never implements improvements.

  • Works long hours but delivers low-impact features.

🟢 Team B (Strong Habits, Value-Oriented)

  • Proactively plans and manages risks.

  • Aligns daily work with long-term product goals.

  • Focuses on delivering customer value over just completing tasks.

  • Continuously improves processes and collaboration.

🚀 Team B outperforms Team A—not because they follow more Agile rules, but because they’ve developed the right habits, following an Agile Mindset.

1️⃣ Be Proactive – Own your process, take initiative, and control what you can influence.
